"The Voice of the Lord"

We've been reading the Psalms as a family during meal times. We're working on making it a habit for every meal, and doubtless we miss some, but it has been a pleasant addition for our family. I got the idea when I read "Honey for a Child's Heart" where the author describes her own family's tradition of Bible reading at meals that goes back several generations. Her account is inspirational. Preacher Man is a fast eater, so he does the honors as soon as he finishes his meal.

Anyway, that accounts for my posting quotes from Psalms twice this week. :)

Do you have a family Bible reading time in your family? What works for you?

Psalm 29
Ascribe to the LORD Glory
A Psalm of David.
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD, over many waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.

The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, "Glory!"

The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!

I love the way David describes "the voice of the Lord"! It's even more notable when read aloud. Try it!

  1. We usually do family Bible study time after the evening meal. We have gone through Daniel. Right now we're studying in Mark. My husband also requires quiet listening and answering questions about the reading. It's been very refreshing for our family, and it also familiarizes everyone with the Bible and talking about it! Great tradition!
